“Eco-engineering: Design with nature” Workshop
26.9.2017 – A one-day stakeholder workshop was co-organized and hosted by the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, within the context of eco-engineering on coastal man-made structures, spearheaded by Dr. Chee Su Yin (CEMACS) and Dr. Louise Firth (Plymouth University). A total of 28 participants from various stakeholder organizations including development companies, state government officials, NGOs, scientists and media, from Penang, Perak and Johor attended this workshop.
Participants were first brought up-to-date on current issues concerning the coastal environment of Penang by Prof. Zulfigar Yasin. Dr. Louise Firth then presented the concept of eco-engineering and cautioned its misuse and risks. This was followed by eco-engineering proof-of-concepts carried out on Penang Island presented by coastal conservationist, Dr. Chee Su Yin. Dr. Gerald Goeden then explained how artificial reefs could be an effective eco-engineering tool in mitigating impacts from coastal development.
Participants then participated in an interactive round-table discussion. Favourable support was given to the idea of eco-engineering with several organizations keen on utilizing the methods in their up-coming projects. Concerns were also raised and discussed on. It was agreed that a team with experts from different fields be set up for large-scale eco-engineering projects to minimize risk and loss. The workshop ended on a positive note with promises of future collaborations from several organizations. The workshop cost RM2,900.00 to run and gave rise to a profit of RM700.00.
