Successful oyster farming venture

Figure 1. The oyster farming project in Kampung Kubang Badak, Langkawi, is now thriving following support from UEM Group through Yayasan UEM.

Langkawi: Five former hotel employees who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic have successfully established themselves as oyster farmers in Kampung Kubang Badak, Langkawi, through a two-year pilot programme introduced by Yayasan UEM.

The group comprises Mohamad Fakarudin Ibrahim, 42; Mohd Razi Baharum and Mohammad Najuddin Hasan, both 44; Azrulfaizal Aziz, 46; and Rosmaini Mohamad Sallih, 47.

Combining their ideas, skills, and financial resources, the five friends launched the Langkawi Oyster Farm project in 2022 to create a new source of income after losing their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, the project has grown into a thriving oyster farming enterprise, supported by funding from Yayasan UEM and technical guidance from the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
